More about solar power in Texas

Texas leads the country in wind power generation, accounting for nearly a third of the country's installed wind capacity in 2007. That's not all: recent actions by TX lawmakers indicate that the state has its sights set on solar, too. In April 2009, the Texas Senate passed a $500 million solar bill that would extend rebates to businesses and homeowners who install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. The Senate version of the bill proposed the following rebate levels: $2.40/watt for residential solar panels; $1.50 for commercial solar panels; and $1.00 for solar panel installations in the industrial sectors. Beyond the TX rebate program, a number of utilities -- like Austin Energy and CPS Energy -- offer rebates to customers who install solar panel or solar thermal (solar hot water) systems. See our Texas solar incentives page for more info.

Also, don't forget about the 30-percent renewable energy tax credit from the federal government, available to homeowners and businesses. Even better, for commercial systems installed in 2009 and 2010, businesses may receive a solar energy grant equal to (and instead of) the 30-percent tax credit. The renewable energy grant option has been made possible by the federal stimulus package that was passed in February 2009.
