Let The Sun Light Your Bulbs
The Hong Kong-based company says its durable, rainproof LED bulb charges during the day in order to provide two to four hours of clean, sustainable light once the sun goes down.
It's mainly designed for developing nations, where the company estimates that a total of 1.6 billion people live without access to electricity and rely on dangerous, wasteful and dirty gas kerosene-powered lanterns for light.
The N100 is designed for durability and long life, and is constructed out of impact-resistant plastic with a cheap, replaceable nickel metal hydride battery. The solar panels and LEDs that provide the actual light are rated for 50,000 hours of operation, says Nokero.
"Weve done everything we can to make this solar bulb affordable and long-lasting so the people who need it can afford it, and reap the benefits," said Nokero's founder Stephen Katsaros. "There are so many ways this product can change lives."
The company says the bulb will cost about $15 if purchased individually, but that it will be supplied at discounted bulk rates to rural areas and developing nations. The N100 also has potential applications in disaster areas where electrical grids have failed - for instance, in the event of an earthquake in California, the bulbs could quickly be deployed to light rescue sites and operations.
