Colorado Ahead of Other States in Renewable Energy
The University of Colorado Boulder recently received a new 500 kilowatt solar photovoltaic power generation installation on its campus. According to Energy Manager Today, former CU-Boulder Chancellor G.P. “Bud” Peterson pledged to the American College and University President's Climate Commitment that the college would be able to meet its short-term goal of becoming a solar-friendly campus. In order to meet the goal, college officials want to be able to power the entire campus using renewable energy, which will reduce energy use and electricity costs as well as fulfill part of its long-term goal of becoming a carbon-neutral campus.
The new solar installation is located on the university's South Campus, which is where the institution's Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics, Center for Astrophysics and Space Astronomy and the Jennie Smoly Caruthers Biotechnology Building are located, the article stated. One of the directors in charge of the project said the solar installation will benefit the university in the long-term as well as bring knowledge of renewable energy not only to the educational sector but to both the municipal and social minded corporate sectors as well.
Moe Tabrizi, the campus sustainability director for CU-Boulder, said this is something the university has wanted to do for years. Not only will this change the way the rest of the United States views the college, but it is a direct reflection of the university's image.
'For more than half a century, CU-Boulder has been a leader in climate and energy research, interdisciplinary environmental studies programs and engaging in sustainability and 'green' practices both on campus and in the larger world,' Tabrizi said in a release about the solar installation. 'This project complements and extends our commitment to leveraging solar power throughout our campus to provide power in a low cost and responsible manner.'
Universities across the country have been getting involved in similar programs along with other businesses and organizations throughout Colorado. According to the Aspen Business Journal, Colorado was one of five states to increase its third quarter photovoltaic solar portfolio by more than 5 megawatts in the third quarter of 2012. Neal Lurie, the Executive Director of the Colorado chapter Solar Energy Industries Association told the source that Colorado has been a top-10 state for solar PV and thermal for the majority of the past decade, which is much more than most states in the country.
Colorado is Creating New Ways to Offer Solar Energy to its Residents
Although Hawaii and Arizona have surpassed Colorado in having more statewide solar installations, Colorado is still recognized for making the huge strides in the solar energy that it has. In addition, the state is creating unique ways to boost the number of installations by offering incentives to encourage its residents to adopt solar PV technology. According to The Aspen Business Journal, last year Denver became the nation's first 'Solar Friendly Community' because it has provided its residents with affordable and accessible renewable energy.
Not only are the incentives great for residents, but it is good for business as well, a solar expert told the source.
“If you look at incentives they really create some incredible cycles in business,' he said. 'You only have to look at what happened with all the layoffs in the wind energy field to see the negative consequences. I think we can be competitive now. I'd rather see an elimination of subsidies for the fossil fuel industry so we'd all be playing on an even field.”
