Pennsylvania Retirement Community Harnesses Solar Power
The $4.5 million solar panel system has been under construction at the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown and is nearing completion. According to its designers, the photovoltaic system will go online sometime in February and is expected to be fully operational by April of this year, generating 1.2 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually.
Patrick Samsell, Masonic Village's chief environment and facilities officer, affirms that the solar panel system "fits really well with some of the other things we do." According to Samsell, the solar panel system will be owned and operated by the solar company Elizabethtown Solar, but Masonic Village signed a 30-year agreement to purchase electricity from the system at a discounted cost of 1 to 1.5 cents per kilowatt of electricty.
The solar panel system should bring about great cost savings to Masonic Village, cutting energy bills by $40,000 to $60,000 every year. Masonic Village's 1,700 residents are excited for the new solar panel system and assert that they are happy to contribute to a reduction in greenhouse emissions.
