Huntington Beach Deploys SunEdison Solar Carports
The arrays will be deployed in a trio of solar carport canopy structures at the Huntington Beach Civic Center, Central Library and City Yard. All financing, construction, monitoring and maintenance will be provided by SunEdison - in return, Huntington Beach will enter into a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) that promises to save the city a significant amount in energy expenditures in the long run.
Mayor Cathy Green said, "Huntington Beach's solar project is a tangible commitment to the environment and our programs in Huntington Beach."
After the construction of the three carports, the arrays will provide 3.15 million kilowatt-hours of clean, renewable energy annually - enough to power over 5,900 average homes.
Municipal governments around the country are turning to solar - the town of Tonawanda, New York recently authorized solar systems for five municipal buildings, while the town of Newark is adding more than 2 megawatts of solar capacity to its schools.
