California District's Wastewater Plant Will Run on Solar According to the project's organizers, nearly 2,700 solar panels will be installed on eight acres of land, with the photovoltaic system fully operational sometime in July of next year. The solar panels will provide clean power for the waste water treatment plant there. The district is funding the solar undertaking with a low-interest $3.4 million loan.

While the whole solar project carries a $7.2 million price, the state is providing $3.8 million in rebates through its California Solar Initiative - or the equivalent of 32 cents for every kilowatt-hour of energy it is expected to generate in the next five years. The solar panels will generate roughly 2.4 million kilowatt-hours of energy per year, supplying 70 percent of the plant's energy needs. Currently, the district pays an average of $750,000 a year in electricity bills.

Keith Lewinger, the general manager for the district, says that the project is a success for the district's residents: "I think it's going to be a great move for the district's ratepayers. Not only do we have green power, but the power is going to cost less after we pay for the capital and interest."
