U2's The Edge Fights Environmental Groups to Build in Malibu U2's the Edge is one of the most prolific guitar players in the history of rock and roll. The music legend has been garnering some unwanted media attention lately, though, as a construction project he is spearheading in Malibu, California is being targeted by state regulators who affirm its construction hasn't complied with environmental regulations.

California Coastal Commission has recommended rejecting the musician's plan to construct five widely spaced homes in Malibu because they could hurt the environmental integrity of the land. The Edge, born David Evans, has been trying to move forward with his construction plans since 2006, but he has met challenges from environmental groups.

Evans, however, has publicly fought back against the allegations. He asserts that his plans call for the homes to meet the highest environmental standards and that builders would use recycled and renewable materials and rainwater catchment systems. Moreover, Evans has plans to construct solar panel systems on the homes to offset electricity use and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"The California coast is a true natural treasure, and I believe in responsible design that honors such a unique location," he said. For their part, environmental groups told the Los Angeles Times they are most concerned with the location of the homes, rather than the way they will be built.

"The buildings themselves may be environmentally correct, but they're in the wrong place," Mary Ann Webster, chairwoman of the Sierra Club's Santa Monica Mountains Task Force, said.
