SunEdison Receives Major Military Solar Contract in Arizona SunEdison - one of the world's leading solar developers and installers - announced this week that it will construct a 14.5-megawatt solar installation on a military facility near Tucson, Arizona. The ground-mounted array will cover around 130 acres of Davis-Monathan Air Force Base, providing enough energy to power approximately 35 percent of the base's total energy supply.

The announcement highlights a trend among Air Force bases and other military installations towards renewable energy - Los Angeles Air Force Base in California, Luke Air Force Base in Arizona and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey all announced solar installations this year.

"This project highlights not only the Air Force's commitment to renewable energy but also Arizona's commitment to renewable energy," said Colonel John A. Cherrey, 355th Fighter Wing commander. "Several years of industry and government teamwork was required to bring this renewable energy project to this point. The use of emission-free solar power to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, as well as long-term savings on electricity costs, is a great benefit to the base."

The U.S. military - as well as the armed forces of other nations - increasingly regard energy independence and climate change as integral components of national security strategy. The military must be able to function even if fuel supplies are disrupted, and solar technology can help provide that capacity while also strengthening domestic manufacturing and employment.
