Here's what you need to know about Illinois solar energy in 200 words or less... First, the state has been doing a pretty decent job at promoting the adoption of solar power. Through the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), Illinois has since 1997 been offering a solar rebate to residents and businesses. The rebate was worth up to 30 percent of total installed costs, capped at a maximum amount of $10,000. [NOTE: As of May 1, 2009, the DCEO program was suspended. Funding is expected to be reinstated in the summer of 2009. Check the DCEO website for updates. In addition to the Illinois solar energy rebate, buyers may also take a 30-percent federal renewable energy tax credit. (For solar power systems installed in 2009 and 2010, companies can opt instead to take a solar energy grant equal to the 30-percent tax credit). Finally, Illinois has clearly established net metering rules, which means that any net excess electricity that's generated by your system is credited to you monthly utility account. On par with the rest of the country, then, Illinois is a pretty favorable place to install solar panels. To learn more, review our Illinois solar incentive page. Or check out the Illinois Solar Energy Association, a group that provides a number of helpful resources.
