Google Campus Solar CAMore about Solar Energy in California

California leads the country in solar energy. As of 2016, California accounted for over 65% of all the grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) capacity in the U.S., with 11 Gigawatts (mW) installed statewide. Compared to other states' figures, this number is huge -- and will continue to grow in coming years. This means more solar panels installed by homeowners and businesses. It also means more solar thermal (hot water) systems and, increasingly, more commercial-scale solar energy plants (C&I). (See "Types of Solar" for more info.) Under the leadership of Governor Brown, the state has pushed to get state to commit to producing 33% of their power from renewable sources by 2020. The hallmark of the state's efforts was the California Solar Initiative (CSI), which aimed to add 3,000 megawatts of new solar power by 2017. As part of the Go Solar California campaign, the CSI has provided almost a decade of solar rebates to customers in California's investor-owned utility territories (PG&E, SCE and SDG&E).
